Background

Journalists are at the forefront of raising awareness on the sustainable development goal to have affordable and clean energy and to implement new rules and regulations related to the improvement of energy efficiency in the country. It is their noble duty to enlighten the public as to topics and that really matter and that will affect the well-being of the Filipino citizens and the country, in general.

On April 12th of 2019, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the landmark Energy Efficiency and Conservation Law (Republic Act No. 11285). The Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) was subsequently promulgated by the Department of Energy (DOE) in November 2019. With this, members of the media are invited to join the energy family in the dissemination of information about this law and its IRRs to help in enabling and promoting LGU participation in energy efficiency and conservation (EEC) initiatives.

Key Objectives

Through the Journalists Bootcamp on Energy Efficiency & Conservation Law, the organizers hope to improve awareness among members of the media and writers as to the clear technical objectives of the new law and for purposes of disseminating information to the public.

This online event aims to gather and share with the journalists across Mindanao the updates on Mindanao Power, the key features of the new EEC Law and its IRR, discuss the development of Local Energy Plans, address questions on the law, in preparation for the Mindanao Energy Efficiency and Conservation Virtual Forum for Local Development on 23-24 July 2020.

Specifically, the bootcamp will:

● Introduce and discuss key elements of the EEC Law and its IRR;

● Local Energy Efficiency and Conservation Plans in Mindanao; and

● Discuss the important role of journalists in the promotion and information dissemination of the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Law and the salient points of Enercon for journalists in the time of the "new normal."

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mindanao Forum will be conducted online with clusters of speakers and LGU participants in remote locations.
